My linguistic weekness
I have an incredible weakness to other peoples' vernaculars. If I hang around any crowd for a long enough time I'll start to talk like them.
Sometimes the change is not so bad, as when I was eating lunch with this young British woman, and said "no" with a British accent, "Nu-ooh." This amused me slightly.
Other times the result is not so tasteful. When I was in elementary school, I vehemently opposed the use of "retard" as an insult. I would call people who used it out, much to their annoyance. Eventually, however, I became exposed to enough people using that word, that I started occasionally using it every once-and-a-while. Now I am working on not using it, even though I get tempted to often. The same thing happened with gay, althougth I am convinced I have never used gay innappropriatley.
Another linguistic thing I picked up is swearing. I don't think I swore much before coming to Catlin, but everybody swears here, so I picked it up after not too long. Now I often find myself injecting "fuck" and "shit" into my conversations, although I have toned it down recently. I have a friend who will get on my case if I swear to much.
So, a question for my readers,1. Do you have this problem at all, or am I just unique in this regard?
1 All three of them.
